Data Quality

TotalVet allows users to assess data quality before carrying out detailed analysis. The Home Screen shows the dates of the last official recording, last milk yield and last action. The events diary can be used to show what events have been recorded. For example:

  • Are serves being recorded in heifers?
  • Are clinical mastitis cases being recorded?
  • Does this dataset include lame or trim events?

Data warnings can also be used to identify ‘problems’ with the data. The chart to the right shows the number of data warnings over the past 2 years. Most of the ‘warnings’ in this dataset are for heifers that calve without any service record. Therefore, it will be difficult to analyse conception rate in heifers.

  • Cows calving without a recorded service – often in farms running a bull
  • Cows calving while still ‘in-milk’ i.e. no recorded dry-off event
  • Heifer serves before the defined ‘Age at First Service’ (default 13 months)

Where data is missing, TotalVet uses high-level algorithms to enhance data quality. Virtual events (service or PD+) are created, allowing more robust analysis of fertility data.

Individual milk recording results can be used to assess ‘absent’ cows. These are cows that are in lactation at a milk recording, but without a recorded sample. In herds that have a lot of ‘absent’ cows, these reports could be discussed with the farmer. It could reflect missing ‘exit’ or ‘dry-off’ events, or missed sampling at a milk recording.
