Mastitis Analysis

Previous research has demonstrated the importance of the dry and lactating periods in mastitis control. Cases are labelled by the likely origin of infection: dry period or lactation origin, based on the days in milk at the index case. Dry period origin cases are those where the index case occurred <31 days in milk. Lactation origin cases are those where the index case occurred between 31-305 days in milk.

The example data on the right shows variation in the number of clinical mastitis cases reported each month (between 1-15).  Numerically, the majority of cases are lactation origin (yellow), with a lot of recurrences (green).

Where assessing mastitis incidence it is important to consider the eligible population i.e. how many cows were at risk of having a case. This chart shows the number of cows at risk of a new lactation origin mastitis in every month i.e. those cows that are between 30-305 days in milk, and have not already had a case of mastitis in this lactation.

The lactation origin rate is plotted, relative to a target of <2 cows in 12 affected. The lactation origin mastitis rate is erratic, but consistently above target. This suggests that environmental management of lactating cows could be improved.
