Milk Production

Milk production can be assessed in TotalVet, as part of an investigation into nutrition, management and environment.

An example chart on the right plots the average lactation curves for cows in lactation 1, 2, 3 or >3 by month of lactation. In this example, milk yield in kilos is shown, but users could also view fat or protein (kg or %), or Somatic Cell Count.

In this example, the milk yield is very flat for months 1-4 of lactation. There is no obvious peak in production which usually occurs around 50-80 days in milk. This suggests something is going wrong with nutrition on farm, which warrants further investigation. For example, this could reflect inadequate dietary energy, or lack of available feedspace.

The chart on the left is from another herd, and shows milk production for lactations ending in the last 4 years.

All 3 measures of milk production have been improving (Lactation yield, standard 305d yield and average milk per cow per year). This reflects excellent nutritional and environmental management over this period.
